Quick summary
- If you’re looking to set up an email address that’s unique to your business, here’s a quick-start guide
- We’ll also cover two of the best tools you can use
- Plus, if you need it, we’ll help you get set up for free!
What is a business email address?
- A business email address is a custom address that has your domain after the @ symbol
- Examples include anthony@courageandgrow.com and hello@courageandgrow.com (as opposed to generic addresses that use @gmail.com, @yahoo.com, @hotmail.com, etc.)
Why do you need a business email address?
- The best reason is that having a business email address makes you look like a pro! Handing out business cards with anthony@courageandgrow.com looks much more legit than anthony@gmail.com (not my email address).
- It also helps to establish your brand and identity
- Plus, depending on your setup, you’ll likely be able to create more than just yourname@yourbusiness.com! You can set up addresses like hello@, info@, returns@, support@, etc.
What you need to get started
- Custom domain: You’ll need to own a domain for this to work.
- Service provider: You’ll also need to sign up with some type of email service provider. This is commonly your hosting provider (but I recommend going another route — more below), but it can also be a third-party tool.
What tools should you use?
- I recommend setting everything up via Google.
- So, that means buying your domain via Google Domains (link below)
Note
If you already have a WordPress website, chances are that you own your domain already as well. That’s fine! You’ll still be able to set up email via Google Workspace regardless of where your domain was purchased.
- And then signing up with Google Workspace (link below)
- How much does it cost?
- Most domains cost somewhere between $10 and $20 per year
- As I write this, Google Workspace is $6 per month

Why I recommend Google Workspace over your hosting provider’s email service
- Most hosting providers offer email when you’re signed up for their hosting. This usually works pretty well, and typically doesn’t cost any extra!
- But, I don’t recommend setting your email up this way. It can make things much more complicated if you ever decide to change hosting providers (which lots of folks decide to do).
- Plus, Google provides world-class email services (Gmail), and makes it easy to scale as your business grows.
- Also, I think $6 a month is totally reasonable!
How to get your business email address set up

- Google will then walk you through getting your account set up
- The setup wizard will also step you through either purchasing your new domain or setting things up to use your existing one
